Everything You Need to Know About Your Mortar & Pestle

Your PriorityChef Mortar & Pestle is made from unpolished granite, designed to grind and crush spices, herbs, salt, coffee beans, and more with precision and control.

Because granite is naturally porous, proper preparation before first use is essential.

Before First Use: Seasoning Is Required

Seasoning will make sure that the stone dust that’s normally left during manufacturing is cleaned out. Seasoning the mortar and pestle is important since this made from volcanic rock, which is very porous. Dirt and debris are inherently trapped in these little holes. Seasoning can help get rid grittiness so that we won’t end up  having rocks in our food.

Step One – WASH

  • Wash the cup with warm water without using detergent
  • Carefully remove any stone dust or residue
  • Repeat this process a few times
  • Another option is to leave it to soak overnight
  • Never wash unpolished granite with soap to prevent discoloration or damaging its natural look
  • Allow to air dry

Step Two – CLEAN (With Rice)

  • Once the mortar is dry, add a small handful of white rice
  • Grind it firmly into the surface until the rice is pulverized
  • The rice will appear discolored at first — this is normal
  • Discard the rice and repeat until the rice grinds white
  • It may take more than one round

Step Three – SEASON

  • Add 4 cloves of garlic to the mortar
  • Mash until it becomes a paste
  • Add 1 teaspoon each of cumin, salt, and pepper
  • Grind everything together
  • Discard the mixture
  • Rinse with clean water (again, no soap)
  • Leave out to air dry

Long-Term Care

  • Rinse with water immediately after use to prevent staining
  • Always wash by hand since this is NOT dishwasher safe.
  • Use only mild soap (if possible unscented soap) or NO SOAP AT ALL
  • Leave out to air dry before storing.
